Remembering the House Always Wins

SO…

For several months I’ve been a Medium subscriber at $5/month; my second time using the subscription option offered here. On average I’ve made 25 cents/month.

I’m not here to make money. I’m here to be read and evidently, based on the number of people following me, not many care to read my stories. A hit to my ego a wee bit of course, but I’m an old time social media/platform user and in that time, 12 + years, I’ve accepted that hooking readers interested in your stories is not for the faint of heart unless your posts promise riches of the kind that some creators claim to make out here. I never quite believed them but it can be daunting to read that ‘creators’ you consider marketers first really do know how to ‘create’ illusions. Medium is filled with them, as are other platforms of this genre, and given the number of followers they attract, there are lots of readers wanting to believe. May the force be with you all.

I will continue to engage with this platform to post short pieces that I’m decent at writing, a skill set learned years ago when I switched from psych nursing to freelance writing. As so many editors said so often, writing long stories is easy but writing short? Ah, that’s another story.

I like Medium though I can’t claim to like much of the writing I find here. Hard as I have tried, I’m too old to be snookered by youngins (usually) who believe it’s easy to snooker and based on the followers they collect, evidently it is.

I’ll continue to write column size opinion pieces on my website and copy/share them here on Medium. I’ll continue to write pieces pertaining to my celebrity chef book I’m trying to sell to the publishing industry and I will continue to share them here as well.

I will use the $4.75 saved here and apply it to another creator platform, not in hopes of collecting readers or making money but because so many writers I can learn from, and do learn from, are posting on one specific site where notable writers I have high praise for hang out. As a lifelong learner, I love to read the works of excellent storytellers whose storytelling not only entertain but teach.

Wishing all a healthy 2023 and as my mom said often, when you have your health, you have everything you need.

Namaste,
