What I especially love about Ms. Scott's philanthropy is its transparency. For 20+ years I covered nonprofits in So Cal and for sure, many were worthwhile but I got snookered a few times by those groups looking for PR and photo-ops as much as-if not more-than helping those in need. As the writer giving press via my columns, it made me a bit cautious, with a dollop of jaded, everytime I agreed to cover an event/cause. Now we know not all nonprofits are sincere but in the 90's early 2000's not so much. They were considered sacred. The United Way scandal in the mid 1990's tarnished the brand a bit. Still, many wealthy people like to get gussied up and show up at events showing off their wealth. I have little doubt that before Ms. Scott writes the check, her team has vetted the nonprofits. Grateful that she's an activist who understands the needs of many folks/groups out here. Marla Miller @writersmama
